Understand the time of day or mood associated with the raga and present it accordingly.
Voice Quality:
Ensure clarity, tonal balance, and control over the voice.
Avoid strain in higher or lower octaves and maintain smooth transitions between registers (mandra, madhya, and tara saptak).
Pitch (Shruti) Accuracy:
Maintain perfect pitch throughout the performance.
The rendition of swaras should be in tune with the accompanying tanpura or harmonium.
Practice pitch modulation when required, without losing control.
Tala (Rhythm):
Follow the rhythmic cycle (tala) accurately and maintain a steady pace.
Synchronize your performance with accompanying instruments like the tabla.
Keep the tempo (laya) consistent and suitable for the piece being performed.
Improvisation (Alaap, Taans):
Show mastery over improvisation, especially during alap, taan, or sargam.
Ensure smooth and creative exploration of the raga without straying outside its structure.
Display control over fast and slow taans, keeping clarity and accuracy intact.
Expression (Bhava):
Convey the emotion and depth of the composition (bandish).
Understand the lyrical content and deliver it with appropriate expression, while still focusing on technique.
Breath Control:
Proper breath control is crucial to sustain long phrases and to avoid breaks in the middle of phrases.
Work on maintaining consistent energy and pitch even during long phrases.
Clarity in Pronunciation:
Ensure clear and correct pronunciation of the lyrics.
Pay attention to diction to convey the mood and meaning of the composition.
Stage Presence:
Maintain a confident and calm demeanor while performing.
Ensure your body language supports your vocal expression without distracting from the music.
Rehearsal and Discipline:
Regular practice to perfect swara and laya is essential.
Develop an understanding of different ragas and talas through consistent practice.
Focus on both technical mastery and emotive expression.
