Guidelines for a Good Indian Classical Dance Performance

  1. Adherence to Classical Style:

    • Ensure strict adherence to the traditional techniques of the chosen classical form (Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, etc.).

    • Maintain posture, stances, and movements specific to the dance form.

    • Follow the discipline of the art form regarding mudras (hand gestures), abhinaya (expression), and nritta (pure dance).

  2. Choreography:

    • Use traditional compositions, but feel free to innovate within the boundaries of classical rules.

    • Keep a balance between pure dance sequences (nritta) and expressive storytelling (abhinaya).

    • Include meaningful transitions between different parts of the performance.

  3. Costume and Makeup:

    • Wear traditional attire specific to the dance form.

    • Use appropriate jewellery, hair accessories, and facial makeup to enhance expressions and stage presence.

    • Ensure costumes allow for easy movement and clarity in displaying mudras and footwork.

  4. Synchronisation:

    • In group performances, maintain perfect synchronisation between dancers.

    • The timing of movements, especially during intricate footwork and rhythmic patterns, should be cohesive and aligned with the music.

  5. Abhinaya (Expressions):

    • Master facial expressions (bhava) to convey emotions and the story behind the dance.

    • Clearly communicate the mood and emotions through your eyes, facial expressions, and body movements.

    • Practice transitioning between different emotions with precision.

  6. Rhythm and Tala:

    • Stay in perfect sync with the rhythm (tala) of the accompanying music.

    • Footwork, body movements, and expressions should correspond to the rhythmic patterns and tempo.

    • Demonstrate understanding of the tala structure and vary your dance speed (vilambit to drut) accordingly.

  7. Stage Presence:

    • Display confidence and grace throughout the performance.

    • Use the entire stage to your advantage and ensure smooth transitions between different sections of the stage.

    • Engage the audience with confident posture and movements.

  8. Mudras and Hastas (Hand Gestures):

    • Execute mudras and hastas with precision and clarity.

    • Ensure that gestures are in harmony with the narrative and musical components of the performance.

    • Be mindful of the correct positioning and alignment of fingers and hands.

  9. Nritya (Technical Dance):

    • Focus on the technical aspects of classical dance, including complex footwork, spins, and intricate body movements.

    • Display agility, strength, and control during the nritta portion of the dance.

    • The movements should be sharp yet graceful.

  10. Rehearsal and Discipline:

    • Regular practice is essential for perfecting technique, rhythm, and expression.

    • Rehearse all aspects of the performance—timing, coordination, expressions, and transitions.

    • Focus on maintaining endurance, as classical dances can be physically demanding.
